After a busy week of training, I had the opportunity to attend another wonderful Mass on a soggy London Sunday. This was at the highly-recommended Brompton Oratory. Full Novus Ordo, Latin, ad orientem.
I didn’t have a chance to find out exactly what music was sung, but it was basically all the chanted ordinaries and propers, done with spectacular expertise and grace.
Eucharist was given by the priests only, at the communion rail, on the tongue.
There were a number of side altars and confessionals arranged around the building, which was consecrated in 1884. It’s all quite stunning work, with wonderfully resonant acoustics. The pipe organ wasn’t at all overbearing, just enough to support the singing.
Seated next to people of all languages and countries, it was wonderful to join together in the universal Latin Mass. If you’re ever in London, this is a don’t-miss! Don’t forget your umbrella.
